Day 08 09-09-2013 Mon Vieste

Today had been declared an official slow day in honour of Anita’s friend Rhonda’s 50th birthday. The celebrations started with a bottle of Spumante (Prosecco not readily available last night). We drove into town from our lodgings on the hill and were leased to find and unrestricted parking spot just off the north end of the beach near the cliffs. Parking availability no doubt due in large measure to the diminished number of tourists.
The cliffs are made of tuf, we think. Close up, it is a white shiny material. There is a striking penis-shaped pinnacle adjacent to the cliffs, reminiscent of those we saw in Cappadoccia in 2007. The beach is partitioned off into sections operated by various franchisees, with beach umbrellas and lounges. Lounge and towel cost €8.

We had spotted the Castello from our lodgings and the beach and walked to the promontory toward it. It was now a military installation so no entry allowed. I climbed up to fence at the cliff face to get a better view for photographing. After only as long as it takes to get off two or three shots my arm was covered in tiny ants, sugar ants we would call then in Oz.
Pickly pear is common here

We proceeded through the town to a church on another promontory by the harbour, passing through white streets lined with shops and eateries. After only a short time we were desperate from some refreshment. The humidity here is quite high. We thought we had left these conditions behind in Hong Kong, but it is actually not much different here today. We settled into a very pleasant spot seated in comfortable lounge chairs out on the marble? street pavement in front of a bar/café in the harbour precinct and had a marvellous time swapping stores over drinks.

Early afternoon by this time so we ascended again to an establishment spied by the girls earlier that was notable for the handsome hunks who were having their early lunch. It was very good lunch and we had a most enjoyable time there looking over a small secondary harbour to the church.

Serendipitously, we found the restaurant nearby that had been earmarked for the evening meal. By wonderful co-incidence, we just managed to catch the proprietors just as they shutting shop for the afternoon siesta and managed to book a table.

Back to home base for a well-earned rest to fortify us for the evening.

The following is a card received by the birthday girl:
